The Different Types of Gardeners

  • August 28, 2024

If you have a large property or estate, you may find you require the assistance of a gardener or team of gardeners. There are many different types of gardeners for you to choose from, and in this article we will be exploring eight different gardening roles that you may need for the upkeep of your estate and grounds.

General Gardener

One of the first types of gardeners that we will look at is the ‘General Gardener.’ A General Gardener will provide all-round care for the garden, such as weeding, pruning, mowing the laws, watering the plants, and keeping the garden in a tidy condition.

Groundskeeper

A Groundskeeper is often employed to work in a larger estate and is responsible for the overall maintenance of the estate’s grounds, caring for the lawns, flowerbeds, and sports fields (if applicable).

Kitchen Gardener

A Kitchen Gardener will care for the kitchen garden, which is usually a small garden located near the kitchen which produces fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs to be used by the household chef. A Kitchen Gardener needs to know about crop rotation and understand seasonal planting.

Landscape Gardener

Another one of the types of gardeners you may employ is the Landscape Gardener, responsible for designing, creating, and maintaining pleasing landscapes and spaces within your grounds.

Greenhouse Gardener

A Greenhouse Gardener cares for the plants within your greenhouse(s). The plants may include exotic plants and so a Greenhouse Gardener might need knowledge of specialised plant care, as well as climate control and greenhouse management.

Water Gardener

Water Gardeners care for plants within a water garden, such as ponds, water fountains, and water features. To do this, Water Gardeners must have a strong understanding of aquatic life and of aquatic care.

Topiary Gardener

Topiary Gardeners need to be artistically skilled as they are responsible for designing and shaping shrubs and bushes into intricate sculptures, and so they will also need to have precise pruning and trimming skills.

Tree Surgeon

The final type of gardener we will be discussing is the Tree Surgeon. These are specialist gardeners, typically hired as and when needed to carry out tree maintenance such as planting, pruning, and removing trees.
